  • Today, there are more than 2,000 Public Power utilities nationwide, serving about 14% of the U.S. population. 
  • In Indiana, 72 Public Power systems serve communities ranging in size from 175 to 60,000 people, serving about 7% of the state's electric load. 
  • Public Power systems traditionally provide some of the lowest cost power in Indiana. In a July 2014 rate comparison, the average bill for a residential user of 1000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) in Indiana's Public Power communities was 10 percent less than the average for Indiana investor-owned utilities.  The average residential rate for Indiana's investor-owned utilities was $120.62 per month as of July 2014. The IMPA member municipal average for the same time period was $108.82.
