Indiana Municipal Power Agency Celebrates Grand Opening of New Conference Facility

Carmel, IN– The Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) celebrated the conclusion of a yearlong construction project with the dedication of the Agency’s new conference center on Friday, August28.   The new meeting facility in Carmel opened to a crowd of representatives from the Agency’s 60 member communities and with several local and state dignitaries present.
The need for the new facility arose when attendance at IMPA meetings and workshops exceeded the available space in its existing building.  The new conference center will enable IMPA to increase the number of attendees it has at workshops and meetings, as well as the amount of training it offers to member communities.
Carmel, Ind. Mayor Jim Brainard, Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission Chair Carol Stephan, Utility Consumer Counselor David Stippler, as well as State Representatives Eric Koch and Jerry Torr were all on hand to help IMPA officials and community representatives from the Agency’s 60 member communities cut the ribbon on the new conference center.
“For over thirty years, IMPA has provided low-cost, reliable, environmentally responsible electricity to communities throughout Indiana,” commented Raj Rao, President and CEO of IMPA.  “With 60 Commissioners serving on our board, combined with other attendees at times, we oftentimes found ourselves constrained by space.  In order to continue serving our members and communities in an optimal way, construction of a new facility was required.   These new and expanded facilities will provide us with broader opportunities to meet and provide all-encompassing services for IMPA’s member communities.”
“We are a unique organization, governed by the 60 members of our policy making board,” commented Sue Saunders, Chairwoman of IMPA’s Board of Commissioners.  “At times, attendance at various meetings and events was too much for our current facilities, and prompted the decision to construct a larger facility able to accommodate our needs.  This new conference facility will encourage even more participation from our member communities, and will enable us to better serve our utilities throughout the state. The new center can accommodate meetings up to 150 people and dinners up to 200 individuals.”
As the wholesale power provider to 59 municipally-owned electric utilities throughout the state and one in Ohio, the Agency’s offices in Carmel have always served as a centralized meeting point for its members.  The new, high-tech conference facility combines first class technology and ample meeting space to accommodate the numerous events held by the Agency and its members every year.  Additionally, the Agency renovated a former daycare facility adjacent to the conference center to accommodate the staff and services of ISC, IMPA’s engineering subsidiary.
IMPA worked with local architecture firm Blackline to design the new facilities while Brandt Construction oversaw the construction and renovation.
