Job Summary

Performs skilled work in the construction, maintenance, inspection, and repair of CEL&P’s electric
transmission, distribution, and street lighting systems. Ensures safe and reliable electric service to
customers by executing energized and de-energized operations, responding to service outages, and
supporting system improvements. Collaborates with line crews and leadership to uphold safety and service
standards across the utility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Constructs, maintains, and repairs overhead and underground transmission and distribution systems.
• Installs, maintains, and replaces poles, towers, conductors, insulators, anchors, switches, crossarms, transformers, capacitor banks, and cutouts.
• Performs underground cable work including pulling, splicing, and connecting in below-grade structures.
•  Installs and maintains single-phase and three-phase electric meters.
•  Responds to emergency outages and performs field switching and service restoration.
•  Works on energized lines using hot sticks and rubber protective equipment.
• Operates heavy and specialized equipment including aerial lift trucks, digger/derricks, backhoes, forklifts, trenchers, and hydraulic tools.
• Trims trees and clears vegetation around electrical infrastructure.
• Assists in training apprentices and may serve as acting Working Foreman.
• Maintains and repairs street lighting systems and associated components.
• Participates in stand-by rotation and responds to after-hours callouts as required.
• Performs all other duties as assigned.

• Provides field leadership and mentorship to apprentice line workers.
• Interacts professionally with the public, contractors, and customers.

• Education and/or Experience:
  • Required: High school diploma or GED; Successful completion of a certified Lineman Apprenticeship Program, including classroom and on-the-job training.
• Technical and Communication Skills:
  • Strong understanding of electrical AC/DC theory, utility construction standards, and safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of NEC, NESC, OSHA, and APPA guidelines.
  • Familiarity with both overhead and underground system operations and troubleshooting.
  • Proficient in reading technical prints, staking sheets, and system maps.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Capable of handling complex troubleshooting in adverse conditions.
  • Able to instruct others in technical procedures and work safely under pressure.
• Conditions and Equipment:
  • Working Conditions
    • Outdoor work in all weather conditions, including emergencies and outages.
    • May work at heights, near energized equipment, and in confined or elevated spaces.
    • Subject to rotating stand-by duty, call-outs, and extended work hours during outages or storms.
  • Equipment Operation
    • Bucket trucks, digger derricks, and material-handling equipment
    • Hand tools, power tools, and line construction equipment
    • Two-way radios, GPS devices, mobile tablets
    • Personal protective equipment (PPE), including arc-flash gear and fall protection
• Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Required: Valid Indiana Class “A” CDL (or obtained within 6 months); First Aid, CPR, AED certifications; must reside within 20 miles of CEL&P’s service building and within Montgomery, County, Indiana.
